Swiping at air
I want to be free to explore all corners of my mind.
I want to remain open to what I discover there
I want to be limitless, boundless
The only way I’ll ever know is if I leap beyond myself into the unknown, crawl over mud, blindly thrust my hands outward and into whatever awaits me in that dark nothingness and pull back what I manage to grab hold of and pull it toward my body to be absorbed, wholly and completely.
When thinking about brand power
Since when?
Sitting at my desk
electronically checking books in — discharging, as we say
— when yours is sifted from the pile and crosses over my desk,
drops into my hands, positions itself at a slight angle
so my wand can swipe its newly affixed barcode
so I swipe. discharge
ready to be taken, charged, electric.
All I feel now is worthlessness, resentment
and self pity. Immediately, I think I can say
I knew you then, which is an uglier sentiment
than sour envy : gloating through association
like you’re some kind of a Kardashian.
